The trail started on Front Street. Bets were placed, strategy rehearsed, dogs and sleds checked and re-checked. Finally, they were off.

In the early days, the trail followed a telegraph line between the various mining villages. This allowed for everyone along the trail to be in constant contact with the mushers' progress. Bulletins were posted in public places and the whole town watched and waited.

Esther Birdsall Darling wrote in her book "The Great Nome Racers" "The route varies constantly -- from hour to hour--from narrow passage between the towering ice hummocks of the Bering Sea to wide plains of unbroken snow; from the steep slopes of Topkok Hill, to the desolate, storm-swept waste of Death Valley; from the pleasant winding road through wooded Council district, to the trackless and treacherous ice on rivers and lakes."

From Nome, the trail winds 204 miles to Candle. Stops include Safety Roadhouse, Topkok, Timber Road House, Council, Boston Creek, Telephone Creek, Camp Haven, First Chance, Gold Run and Candle. Even the names bespeak the color of the event, the history that's being relived.

For more than 75 years, Alaska Airlines and its people have been guided through thick and thin by a shared commitment to integrity, caring, resourcefulness, professionalism and spirit. Especially spirit - an Alaskan spirit, born in the land the airline is named after - a place where "can-do" and "neighbor-helping-neighbor" are facts of life.
